Onesha Botheju

Welathantrige Sadaru Onesha Botheju represents Piliyandala and calls Kandy home. At 22, she's currently a second-year university student, and she's stepping into pageantry for the first time with no prior competition experience behind her.

What she does bring is a clear, specific cause. Onesha is focused on Sri Lanka's youth brain drain, the steady departure of talented young people to build their futures abroad rather than at home. She's watched it happen to people around her, capable individuals who could have shaped the country's future choosing instead to take their skills elsewhere, and she wants her platform to put that conversation in front of more people.

It's an unusually pointed advocacy for a first-time contestant, and it says something about how she thinks about ambition more broadly. "Aim for the moon because even if you fail you're still among the stars," she says, a fitting outlook for someone whose real cause is about keeping ambition, and the people who have it, closer to home.
